National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art was created in 1937 for the people of the United States and is now funded through a private-public partnership.

A joint resolution of Congress, and accepting the gift of financier and art collector Andrew W. Mellon.

The museum now comprises of two buildings; the West Building and the East Building (1941 & 1978 respectively), they are linked by a underground passage.

In 1999 the Gallery opened an outdoor sculpture garden.

The US government provides funds, through annual contributions, which support the museum's operations and maintenance.

However all artwork is provided through private sector donations and funding.

The museum sometimes thought to be but in fact is not part of the Smithsonian Institution.
