| YouTube is the giant of online video, world famous and the clear market leader by a long way. Launched in 2005, it was purchased in 2006 for US$1.5 billion and is now owned and run by Google Inc. (as of Oct. 2011). Originally focused on user-generated video content, YouTube has vastly expanded and now streams all types of video, including films, documentaries, personal video blogs and even presidential addresses, and Queen's speeches. Music videos of high profile stars are often now launched on YouYube. On April the 1st 2008 YouTube famously "Rickrolled" the entire Internet by linking all their hompage videos to Rick Astley's music video "Never Gonna Give You Up", (which was very annoying, and really not even funny). In 2011 YouTube announced that statistics for 2010 had shown that it was their most active year so far with nearly 8 years of video content uploaded every day. On average 3 billion videos were viewed every day, and during the year YouTube reached it's 700 billionth playback. YouTube states that it's vision is "to give everyone a voice". | |||||||
